Today is sorting day!

Post by madison174 » Mon Jan 25, 2016 8:56 am

With the warm weather all week today is the day birds are getting moved into breeding pens. We bought our farm in Septermber and had to spend so much time making it critter friendly (chickens and horses) that most of the silkies got put into pens according to size lol. Today is the day. My egg layers are getting moved outside (insulated, moderately heated coop) and my last batch of mixed inhabitants are getting colour sorted into proper pens. We've been building our flock and planning this for years now, and with the purchase of our agriculturally zoned farm (not ag rez!) we can finally go ahead and live the dream! I'm sure I sound like a goof, but this is so exciting for me! We have space to quarantine birds that my daughter wants to take to shows without risking the whole flock. She can finally take some of her silkies to shows, I can't even explain how excited she is for this! Frances, Laura, Pete, Kathy...they've all encouraged her to do this. Let the learning begin!

Pictures are never a problem lol. We've been blessed with some good friends that housed our flock before we bought our farm, so we've got a pre-start on them, but this will be a first for our own farm. My first home-hatches are currently sitting on my dining room table until they're stable enough to go in with a few older chicks lol. My mother (city people, admittedly I was born there too but have always lived in small towns) just shakes her head. I think she's given up trying to change me.

My parents came over on Saturday to visit, which they never really did before we had the farm for some reason. I think my Dad likes it out here. But my daughter went out into the paddock with a bag of treats and had our 3 mini horses chasing after her across the field. It was absolutely adorable! She laughed and laughed, and it was so good to hear her! Even made my mom smile. She doesn't understand us but it's nice to see even she can't deny how happy the kid is :)

Thanks Al. The kid is happy, that's a major life accomplishment for me, check and check. I wish I had her life when I was a kid. I know right now she appreciates it, but when she really understands how lucky she is, and wants to do the same for her kids...then it will all be worth every water bucket, shovel of manure, sleepless night tending sick animals, and countless hours spent chopping wood lol.
