What colour / sex am I ???? BATCH # 1

Post by Ontario Chick » Wed Jul 19, 2017 11:28 am

Bunch of hints
Parents, the male is out of a Blue outcross mother and Columbian father
Columbian breeding pen 2017.jpg
25 chicks
Batch # 1.jpg
I was hoping for at least half of the chicks to be Columbian at this point it looks like mostly Blue Columbian accept for few anomalies.

To my admittedly inexperienced eye, the black one doesn't look the same shape as the others, and I think she hopped the fence in the hatchery lol I can't see the comb very well, but it does look as if the back half of it might be a single?? Any of my black birds that hatch almost solid black like this one, end up with red leakage. I don't think it's a Wyandotte at all, and I think it's a girl, but do NOT take my word for any of it lol
The next two look like 'normal' Columbian pattern birds...looks like black pattern as opposed to blue, but hard to tell since my phone seems to give all the pictures a yellowish cast. No idea on genders, I can't see their faces or compare toes, but I'm going to think positively and say both female
For the next two, I think the one on the left is going to be solid blue??? And guessing male, and one on the right will be blue Columbian with sparse markings...and female I think.

I must say the Black one is a bit of a mystery and if they had a loose chick and just popped it in in the hatchery I guess it will take a while before anybody can guess, it seems to be smaller then the rest and I would have guessed younger because it kept the egg tooth longer and even with the columbian gene missing the black legs are throwing me a bit.

I think maybe you got @JimW missing Ayam Cemani chick lol.
It's very dark. I'd LOVE to say that maybe you lucked out and got a black Wyandotte though...sigh....

Is that a chipmunky one by the right side of the feeder?
This black one is split Er with something.....only way that could happen. You didnt have an escape and mixing did you? I dont think any of your girls look Er at all. And if thats a chipmunk by the feeder both parents carry e+ which i doubt....although i think you may have an e+ hanging out given the head markings. Just split e+/eb.

That black chick cant be from those parents....unless someone is masking something amazingly well.

The chipmunk by the feeder is one of the two "darkest" in the separate picture, it only looks darker in that picture.
There are no other males here accept the Wyandottes , so no possibility of escapee here, can't speak for the hatchery though ;)

If it's Jim's he can have it back, but this one has yellow skin :)
I am going to spend few blissful weeks thinking it's a throwback to the Blue outcross and I got a Black pullet although the Black legs make it a bit of a stretch ? :pop:
