I love showing poultry.
I love the fact that I always learn something new from other exhibitors and poultry judges.
I love the fact this process makes me a better breeder.
But, where are the youth?
How is this reaching the next group of exhibitors?
Well, CHB decided to start a pilot project that focused on youth.
We are selling 6-8 chicks to a family at a reduced rate.
This is from our own breeding stock. In my case the Buckeye.
Well, today the family will come to the farm and we will start with Chick and Brooding Session. I have chicks from varies hatch dates, this way they will get chicks that meet their needs.
The only expectation from this mentorship is that the youth must enter in our Fall Show. I would love to see a showmanship class....but that will be later.
We just really want to focus on correct Standard Bred Poultry and a variety of breeds. IF CHB can not source the breed they want to work on we promised to work and mentor on the poultry they have...pointing out the difference of a hatchery and Standard Bred Stock and paying close attention to the SOP and why it is so important.
We are also hoping the all the youth in the program can get together and support each other in the years to come. And continue showing the best stock they have.
I think, this is an excellent partnership. I would like to see this grow across the region.
