Please Explain "BLUE / BLACK / SPLASH" I don't get it!!!

Post by Poultryprincess » Thu Sep 08, 2016 11:15 pm

I understand that BLUE & Black can make Blue & Black chicks...but where the heck does SPLASH come into play?
Are SPLASH chicks only a slightly lighter version of BLUE?
Is it a defect that just looks really good???

Googled SPLASH silkies look like a veri light colored bird
( off white, veri pale blue with SPOTS )
Has the bird been crossed with White some where to get the lighter color?
Will the birds turn a darker blue after molt?

I had hoped for a Splash offspring, but Nothing!
Everything is coming up Blue.
"IF" I add a Splash, will I get a Splash even if I cross with a Blue?

I'm SO darn confused & need to understand before Mount Forest - ha ha ha

THANXXXXXXXXXXXX in advance to Anyone who can make me understand this!!!!!! :yay:

Splash = white bird with random blue feathers
Black to Black = Black *** 2 copies of black
Black to Blue = 50 / 50 Black And Blue
Blue *** 1 copy of Blue 1 copy of black
Blue to Blue = Black / Blue /Splash
Splash to Splash = Splash **** 2 copies of blue
Doug the Chicken man posted the Punnett square for the Blue color somewhere already
This is a trio of Splash Ameraucanas

Thanx Ontario Chick, I have the chart....but this is what is stumping me -
Black is always black
Blue is always Blue
But "splash" seems to be anything that is a bit of a mix???
I thought Splash had a light colored feather (pale blue/white)
with dark spots of dark blue or black!

But seems a Splash can also be a darker blue with the odd black spots, right?
So is Splash a mixture with NO defined color....just whatever pops out?
( with perhaps Blue & black spots, or ANY offshoot of various colors from the blue hue? )

EXCELLANT looking birds btw <3

That is incorrect.
Splash is always White with random blue feathers, as described in SOP, regardless of breed,
here is a Splash wyandotte

REALLLLY?

Wow, so what if the bird is called a "Blue Splash" would that mean the Main color is BLUE with "some" splash?
Your pic of a Splash wyandotte is what I thought Splash was.
But I have seen various colors included in the Splash, which made me think I really didn't understand the whole Splash concept.

The variable in splash is just how many spots they have. I prefer ones with more spots than white, others like them more white..just depends on preference. Same genetics, just more spots gives them the impression of looking darker.

So if the bird has alot of "spots" it would have an overall darker color, but still be considered a Splash?
If the bird is mostly blue as long as it has some white spots then it is still considered a Splash?

That would be why I have seen so many pics of "Splash" but can't get a handle on what color it actually is.
Splash could be any combination of the Blue / Black / white as long as it is still a mixture of at least 2 colors?

OK I think I get it ~ somewhat.
Black is always Black
Blue is always Blue
Splash is always a combination, but of various quantities of colors???
Right???? Did I get it figured out FINALLY????

Same here, there is nothing like good defined blue splashes on clean white background to make the bird really stand out.

No!
As long as you use pictures from the internet to gain understanding, you will always be confused, because the info is incorrect.
The bird that is mostly Blue with some splashes of other colours is just not a very good Blue.
