STRIPPER ~ Silkie ~ SHOWGIRL Breeding question???

Leg feathering and feather stubs are due to completely different genes, naked neck has nothing to do with it. It's tough to get rid of leg feathering, because there are a number of genes and expressions. You'd have to start with an outcross to a breed that has no leg feathers or stubs. But it can be done, the Germans have a breed of Langshan that has no leg feathers (Mind you to me it doesn't look like much like a Croad Langshan either...)

Thanks for the explanation, Robbie. That makes sense.
My objective would be to keep most of the characteristics of a Silkie, i.e., fluffy feathering everywhere except on the legs, expressive eyes, big personality, good layer, broody tendency for a self-sustaining flock, ... but that's not my current reality. It's fun to dream though. ;-)

There are a lot of breeds that I like, except for the feathered legs. I'd probably have them except for the feathering. The only breed that has feathered legs that makes "sense" from a practical perspective to me is the Pavlov, which has unique feathering, more like a grouse than a chicken. The feathers are tight to the leg, dense but short, and the toes are mostly bare.

Pavlov? That's one I haven't heard of until now. I imagine they are difficult to find.
I am the same about breeds with feathered legs: like a lot of things about most of them - except the feathered legs. Not because of the way they look, but because they can be higher maintenance birds.
Oops - apologies to PP ... I just realized that I hijacked your thread.
