WHEW ~ NO MORE extra cockerels...ALL gone!!!! "Maybe?"

FRF...thanks...i dont really have an issue with doing them in, but for a few its a pain in the, well you know...just setting everything up...the scald, the cone, the table...it takes time to get it organized and its all done in short order...if i had a snall flock of meat birds it would make more sense but for two or three?...GAH!!!....

PP...thank you ...not sure what that splash is all about...friendly bird too...and not overly aggressive with the other guys, won't back down but doesn't pick a fight either...the other one, the black with the multi colour tail is a nice bird too..the earliest noise maker of the bunch...nice posture, good feet...i got the two of them from a gal over near Stiitsville when i was looking for friends for my one hatchling when i thought Gimpy was a goner...Gimpy is still going strong...i'll let her live as long as she doesnt show distress...

Sometimes I cut up the bigger bantam roosters and boil them for cat food. To save time I just skin them. I hate doing it however and then there is that "smell" turns me off eating chicken for days after. Mostly though I put down the bantam chicks the moment I realize that they are male. Saves feed, time and gives more space for the girls to grow out.

That deafening silence is the sound of all of us backing away slowly while trying not to make eye contact. Because most of us are at odds with ourselves, torn between WAY too many boys at home, and "he's so pretty, I could maybe make room for just one more". The struggle is real, man, and we must struggle in silence lest we be locked in the loony bin :D

TOTALLY agree! I think that Splash roo is Handsome...but so are the extra cockerels I already have - LOL
I absolutely "hate" having too many roos because then the girls are screaming all day.
But so far I haven't had to kill any for just being a cockerel...but I did "give" away 3 roos to a friend for his breeding program.
Also a man nearby who runs a Rescue type farm. If I have a sweet roo then I will give it to Norm.
Buy Norm a few bags of feed, sometimes make him a tray of lasagna & the roo lives happily ever after.

I'm dreading when my hatch from July starts providing More cockerels who need a home - ackkkk

Seeing all I raise is bantams I just take the breast meat from all hens & roosters & seeing they only get some whole corn & real free range they taste kinda like pheasant . Very quick easy to remove breast meat no big mess . Luck

I have to admit I was eyeing up Tom's easter egger cockerel...my favourite EE boy, Gonzo, has been snatched by a coyote and I'm over anxious for a replacement for him...I'm see-sawing between getting that boy from Tom, or simply waiting for Gonzo's sons to grow out. I think I *only* have 15 or 20 of Gonzos offspring, and at least 22 of those will be male LOL. Not to mention the other 25 or so roosters I need to freezer! The fact that I'm considering buying roosters from other people, in a cockerel year, means I've officially lost it.

Is there Any Gonzo females???
Perhaps a new male to breed with Gonzo's offspring will be a plus to the flock?

Then again it's always a bummer to have a lot of males thru the winter... I just don't have the space. Already eyeing the space I had reserved for a breeding / brooding section, so house the latest hatch. NEED a barn!!!!!
