Your opinion wanted: white eggs.

My plan for this spring is to hatch some Anconas- in theory more meaty than the leghorns (at least they were supposed to be but who knows any more) that are supposedly pretty wild. We'll see. I am tempted to also try some Barred Hollands, supposedly quiet tempered, if Performance lists them this year but again they have been crossed with (probably barred rocks) and some lay tinted eggs now instead of white.
Just MO but in a way I wish they would have been bred with white earlobes- they look too much like barred rocks, the only real distinguishing feature that makes them much different than production barred rocks (other than the egg colour of course) is 6 points on the comb instead of 5.

The leghorns from Frey's are production leghorns that have a mystery breed background The interesting thing is that you can make barring on a chicken "disappear" if you breed it to be white- the bars might still be there, but instead of black and white, the chicken is white and white so you can't see them until they pop up in a cross.

of all the leghorns I had only the buffs were skittish. the blacks are easy going and the light browns I got from Coonhound are curious and down right the opposite of skittish. I think I even got a decent LB cockeral to breed back to the hens. Thanks Man! I think what makes them skittish or not is human interaction.

I've read leghorns are skittish. Is that your experience Lynners? I didn't know Freys had leghorns. Interesting.

The leghorns were my first experience with having my own chickens, so I don't have much to compare them to...They were more skittish than I remember my grandma's red sex links being. I wouldn't say they were skittish to the point of being unmanageable. I had to learn what time of day to handle them if needed, though...I don't know if that's typical of most chickens. Early morning before they laid and afternoon/evening most of them would squat as soon as I approached and they were easy and calm to pick up. They'd also all come running to welcome me home whenever I pulled in the driveway after work and weren't scared of my vehicle or my dog at all.

One thing I know for sure...they are NOISY!
