Poultry Talk Ontario (pto.ca)

In Performance Poultry breed lists they show for sale Chanteclers that are partridge and others that are buff. I’m confused. I thought the breed was white. I also understood that Partridge Chantecler were a composite not a true Canadian Chantecler. I want to start adding this breed into our backward flock. I was leaning to the Partridge just because I’m not keen on white birds (hey, we all have to have a weird hang up). So, is Performance selling a true Partridge Chantecler....or just classifying the bird colour. Or am I really going in a circle here...?

Yes, I wondered about that too ... the original breed was white, and I think partridge was developed much later in Alberta. Buff is an even more recent colour variety (don't even know if it's a recognized variety yet), and I'm not sure where it was developed. I'm guessing that probably PP doesn't have a subcontract with a white Chantecler breeder at this time.

My first chantecler were Partridge, that has to be 20 years ago, so not new. Never heard of buff though.

If it's anything to do with Cirrus Hill it will likely be very serious and good. Serious preservatonists. In fact Kathy (Wllady) answered a bunch of genetics questions for everyone concerned).

I have these 2 White banty Chantecler roosters with my free roam flock to cut down on comb sizes on future chicks . Working not bad plus very docile .

The partridge Chantecler was originally called the Albertan, created in..Alberta not long after the white Chantecler. It was deemed they were very similar in type to the white one and renamed partridge Chantecler. Photo is this years hatch at 7 weeks
