@thegawd that's a great story! We have red tailed hawks here...we have been known to throw whatever is handy at them......mostly shovels. Lol
My rooster Otis, watches the sky all the time. When that alarm goes so does everybody...including my Silkie, and Showgirl roosters.

there are lots of breeders of Chanties around (including me). All depends on where you live as to how far away you want to go to get them. They are on the Heritage Livestock (previously known as Rare Breeds Canada) site as on the watch list. You just have to know the breed to make sure you're getting true to type (no green on legs, tiny cushion comb, no wattles, long flat back etc). I've had them 10 years now, started with 2 lines from Quebec and added some from the main breeder Cirrus Hill that now only does the Beltsvilles (like Killerbunny does)-they farmed out the Chantecler hatching elsewhere.

I picked up some Partridge Chanteclers from Performance Poultry and they are developing into some nice birds. I know they are not the true heritage Chanteclers…..but I wanted them for their darker plumage.

Thank you in advance for any help given 😊

I’m certainly no expert, but we have the same for the first time. Our young friend next door has sexed ours to 100% score. He calls it a bubble on top, just before the beak. I don’t see evidence of that slight orange brown raising on your birds heads….my totally uneducated guess: they are female.

By the way, there is a Facebook page that is dedicated to this breed. They don’t post a lot, but it has some great info on the breed.

Is this a chantecler?

I think there is pure white, partridge, and buff (not accepted by APA)
