WWW many thanks for the in depth info. I'm very tempted to get Barred Rocks in the spring :).

Killerbunny's mixed reds sounds amazing. I'd so like to have some double yolkers early in the morning!!!!!

I think my girls have got wind that they are leaving. They have shifted from giving me one paltry egg a day to four now {LOL}.

Leaving? What does that mean, exactly?

A friend will take the two newbies and I'll try to find homes for the three 3 year olds this fall. I figure that if I charge for them on Kijiji, people will keep them for eggs rather than slaughtering them. Any ideas on that?

I think it depends in part on how much you charge for them. Also, if they are 3 years old, they are not much good for meat anymore - too tough for North American palates, especially the ones used to grocery store poultry. The fact that they are "old" but still laying may work in their favour.

If you want to sell older hens, be honest about breed, how many eggs they are laying, and when. Most layer breed hens (Leghorn or RSL or Browns or Black sex links) over 2 1/2 year old won't lay all that much in fall, winter or spring without supplemental lighting...but are egg-laying machines still in the summer. It depends on how much light they get and when, and feed and setup. Most people who think they have "freeloaders" are actually experiencing a natural slow-down due to normal moult (usually occurs in late summer-late fall) or predator pressure, and so the call for "laying or point-of-lay hens" increases in the Fall when eggs are short...
meanwhile, a little patience or a little bit of extra light in the coops (sunlight is best, so add skylights and windows if you can, but electric lights work too) will make sure that your egg shortage is very short-lived.
Making sure there is nothing startling your hens, like mice or rats running around, or brush wolves howling nearby at night, will keep the egg numbers up higher as well. Chickens are neurotic creatures. If they smell or see skunks or other weasels, or hear coyote hybrids howling, or are competing for feed with mice or rats, their lay rate will drop way down. If you introduce a rooster they don't like, same thing.
That is why I LOVE to pick up so-called "old" or "spent" layers. A month or two here, and they're pounding out eggs again, daily.

Sister, my 5 year old from @windwalkingwolf eggs is still laying 3/4 per week. She has her babies each year but this is the first year she didn't go broody. I have chatted with her to say she is allowed to slow down and have a comfortable retirement with her beau (Frank) and eat bugs as much as she wants!

Thanks very much for the info WWW. There has been a skunk around here. One of my dogs was accompanying me to open up the chicken coop one morning when I spotted it and managed to call her and return to the house without her seeing it and giving chase!!!! One hen is moulting and I don't know what the excuse is with the other one {LOL}. I'll be sure to be honest about the birds that I plan to re-home.
