Barred Rocks molting

Post by Happy » Fri Jan 04, 2019 10:15 am

Has anyone ever had a Barred Rock have anything other than a hard molt? Maybe it’s just the hatchery girls? My Cochins lose their feathers slowly and molt over a couple of months. My OEGB typically the same (I’ve never seen bare skin on them). My Barred Rocks seem to drop at least 50% of their feathers over a 24 hour period! Poor Sharon started molting Christmas Eve. She’s getting lots of protein but her feathers are slow to grow back in. She’s pretty happy to have the sun beating in on her today.

Truly pathetic ;)
Since I only have 2 breeds and keep all different ages together, I find the quick molters much preferable, unless it's January.
I have some birds I never see molt, it's just so gradual, but the no lay period seems to be longer, some just shake one day and it all comes off, hard not to feel sorry for them.

My BSL's had bare skin the last time they molted; it seemed forever for their feathers to grow back. I noticed a lot of feathers that had fallen out in the coop last month but no bare skin. Maybe it's the barred rock in them.

Well OC you are right about egg laying. Sharon was laying every other day up until a couple days before she started molting. Only one of my older girls is still laying.

My Swedish flower hens were the worst. They dropped about 60% of their feather in one day as well. All they did for the entire summer was to sit there and do nothing. They were hot and cranky. It took about 6 weeks for their feathers to come back in. Pretty ugly. Good luck with her.

That's probably why she does it like that she has a plan. Inside the house here I come!
