Silkies that are frizzled? sizzled?

Post by syeo » Sun Apr 16, 2017 8:31 pm

Purchased day old silkies from a lady who had purchased fertile eggs and incubated them. At first I thought half of them had split wings and the other half looked ok. Now that they are getting bigger I think they are frizzled or sizzled (not really sure the difference). Their wing feathers actually look good with no gaps between flight feathers, they just curl at the ends. When I googled pics of frizzle/sizzle chicks they look exactly like them. A bit disappointed as I was told they were pure silkies and thats all I wanted. Now I need to know how they overwinter? Do I need heat in the coop? What other special care do they need?

Syeo, who'd you buy from? I've got quite a few sizzles and frizzles...they don't require extra care or heat at all. I adore mine!

I'll try to explain feathers.
This is a frizzled silkie. It has the traditional silkie feathers but with a curl to them.

This is a frizzled sizzle. It has hard feathering (that's the sizzle part) with a curl (that's the frizzle part).

This is a smooth sizzle. Hard feathering (sizzle) but no curl (smooth).

And then of course there's your regular silkies.

I emailed the lady who originally purchased the eggs, but she hasn't replied as yet.

I'm working on a frizzled sizzle naked neck...one so far this year...hoping for more. It's a lot of planning and genetics to get these guys right lol! But I do love them, silly birds!
