A quick update since that last post:
My avatar rooster, Humphrey, (yes we named him), is now in the freezer (where he was meant to be in the first place). He is, however, immortalized in an eBook that I composed. So I should change my avatar at some point, but gosh darn, he was our first rooster and a really good one. He was just too big for the little hens.
And I may not decide to get barred rocks next. I'm going to try incubating and hatching eggs to see how it goes. We have a new rooster - Barred Rock Burt (with feathery, part Cochin, feet).

Re: laying life of BSL's
Thanks Tom, but we have a new rooster, given to us this past summer as a "thanks" for housing a pig for a week or two. It's a barred rock/cochin cross, and a better size for all our hens. You could put your extra roosters in the freezer, you know!TomK wrote: ↑Fri Mar 02, 2018 6:49 pmKim...i have 11 barred rocks from day old in june '15...bonnies hatchery...incredible birds...great foragers, friendly, great, and I mean great, layers... Plus, I'm going to put a few eggs into an incubator at the beginning of April.... will see how that goes.
Oh, and... Frey's also sells barred rocks.

You could bypass the freezer and go straight to a coq au vin, you know!TomK wrote: ↑Sat Mar 03, 2018 10:55 pmKim...but but...you can never have too many roosters, can you?... ...i have seven in total now after the latest one just dropped dead...'Gimpy' of course, I will keep just cuz its the right thing to do...and I have three gorgeous siblings of EE over Blk Orpington, and OC will be interested to know I stil have 'Big Boy', the neurotic Columbian...lol...and I still have to figure out how to trim this spurs...good god they have to be darn near three inches long, and he's terrified of me...oh well...and I have 'Coach' a gorgeous Splash Cochin and finally Gimpy's hatchmate 'Blue' who is a very nice Ameraucana out of a blue egg..lol..
