Looking like hes moulting some. :-)
Nice beetle sheen and his leg colour is great. I have seen way worse combs on ameraucaunas too!! His is a bit on the larger size but not bad at all. Its hard to judge conformation with one photo but so far he is looking decent.

Mine is 3 years old. This year is the first time he was bred. He's a good breeder, and very fertile. I know he isn't perfect - he has feathers on the underside of both wings that have white mixed with the black (they showed up when he was about 1 1/2 years old), and he doesn't have normal wings. His tail has been nicer. He broke it off when he was breeding, and they all had mites earlier this year. It's improved since I took him away from the hens. As far as his size, I have never weighed him. When you say he's a bit large, do you mean body size, or height? I don't have a front view picture, but I will take one.

I wanted to see what else you could find that wasn't good so I know what to aim for, and so I can decide whether I want to keep him for another year.

i was talking about his comb-not his body size per se....looking pretty nice though, the second photo looks like his muff is a bit uneven-plusher on the right than left, but if they had mites earlier that could just be over-preening or something. i love his sheen.... :-) if you have a bunch of girls with smaller combs, and bigger muffs i would use them with him to try and select for the smaller comb and more "muffiness" (for lack of a better cool term for poofy faces).

Glad you mentioned his age, it changes things a bit.
His legs are a bit light, dark slate would be ideal, black is now accepted on Black bird,
BUT on an older bird, I would expect the legs to be lighter the comb somewhat largish and the color being a bit off, so all in all a good looking bird.
I would love to see a picture of him at 1 or 1.5 years old to see how he changed with maturity.
*******************************************
The picture I posted for TYPE reference is a show bird of about 1-1,5 years of age in a "fighting form" that was probably kept under a bucket to keep his color as Black as possible and certainly wasn't cavorting with the girls, because that would have cost him his beard. ;)

Hey you just answered my question OC! My 2 black ameraucanas from Joan (but your lines) have dark slate legs with cute white toenails. They are under a year though.
