Buckeyes- first show of the season

Post by la-chicken » Sun Jul 31, 2016 10:44 pm

I took very young 2016 Hatch ( 5 month old) birds to their first APA Sanctioned Show this last week end.

My breeding/ show goals for this year and most likely next years is to win Champion American Class.
This last week end I am one step closer.
I received Reserve Champion American Class.
Although, I see a whole lot of work that still needs to go into the breed. I was rewarded for my breeding goal focusing on yellow leg. Type is in my flock and I just need to wait till the November Show to see if my weight is close to the SOP Standard.

Still continuing with the consistent Buckeye Colour but has accepted the fact this is on going. But, I have made great strides.
When I have a better picture from the photo booth I will attach it.

nice work la-chicken!
I am concentrating on breadth this year for my stock. I have good low pea combs and yellow legs so Ethan's last suggestions for me were to concentrate on length & breadth of body frame.
Adding some of Lay stock a few years back helped a lot.

But, DO NOT over look the skull width! Wide skulls create wide bodies. The skull is the power house to the whole bird.
Wider skull= wider body. You will never get large frame birds with a narrow skull.
But, you need to look at the Buckeye and make sure it is balanced. Longer back and wider girth can create a non-balanced bird. And that can never work.
I have found with breeding Buckeyes you need to consider the whole bird. And conditioning and feed is extremely important.
