Homesteading.newb do you know the age of both birds. The larger comb on chicken at back indicates could be a rooster, but I have had a few hens with huge combs. Maybe you could post a picture of just that one for us to look closer. Legs don't seem any larger than the other one.

Don't let anyone tell you who you can or can't be.

Sorry, at first glance I just assumed it's a pair, (I still do, but just my opinion :)) Ameraucanas have a pea comb, so just a very small Single row of beads on a pullet/hen and Three rows of beads on a rooster, that's the ideal anyway.Homesteading.newb wrote:
I am a bit confuse. I was told they were both hens. Are you say one is a roo??? I havent heard any crowing...
Ameraucanas are notoriously difficult to sex, so only time will tell, if they are Easter eggers the comb could be anything, so no help there.

What an obsession. I literally sat in the run with them for 2 hours this morning. Raising chickens is by far, one of the best decisions I've made EVER! Hope the two new additions come around like and take to me like my first 5.

Sorry, I hate to say it, but I think you were sold a pair of EEs; i.e., a male and a female. The chicken in the pics you just posted looks like a cockerel/rooster to me: hackle feathers on the neck are pronounced and pointy, the tail feathers look to be rooster-like, plus the comb and wattles are significantly bigger than your pullet; hers are quite a bit smaller. He looks like he has a friendly personality - sweet face.
EEs are usually friendly birds, and very good layers. I'm sure these two will come around once they get used to their new place and people.
Glad you're enjoying your flock so much, and that you've found us here on PTO.

One of the pictures also shows prominent spur buds on legs, so definitely boy.
Lots of tail feathers, that would make the sex of the bird are missing, so easy to make a mistake.
Spending hours watching chickens is good for the soul. :)

Thank you graciously. Another question. Assuming now that he is a rooster (and my neighbours dont complain and i keep him because i really want to keep him), what happens with the eggs if he decides to do his thang. I don't want to hatch chicks (....yet). Can i still collect and eat without worries. Sorry for all the beginner questions.
