Re: Rhode Island Red - Standard Bred
Well how did everyone do raising reds this year ? It was not one of my better years , a few old senile moments ( brain Cramps ) resulting in first 2 hatches being complete failures. Next was the coldest spell of weather Ive seen in many years and eggs frozen before I could get to them . At this moment I have around 45 @ the awkward teenage stage . A normal year would of been setting breed pens up now . Still raised 60 plus , a few will be kept the rest are chicken dinner.

Re: Rhode Island Red - Standard Bred
As Bob G knows....I too, have started my SC RIR journey.
And hatching has begun....Well, with the unfrozen eggs that I can collect vs hens moulting. I have hatched 10 so far and more coming. I hope to hatch 50- 75. But, time will tell.
Here is my foundation stock.
These are straight from Adrain Rademachers Farm in Minnesota. And do they have size! Like all Reds- need to work on feather quality. This SOP is so detailed! Still studying and reading and comparing.
Am I stopping with the buckeye? No, Just added more work. LOL

Beauty @ its best the RIR, but I am biased I love the big docile giants . I am off to better start this year with just under 40 hatched thus far . I hope to turn off the incubator in the first week of May. Good luck to all the red breeders this year.
