I'm thinking of adding Chanteclers to our free range flock next year. I've been reading comments similar to this: "If you choose to free-range your birds, Partridge Chanteclers may be a better color variety to own due to the fact they camouflage better against the landscape than a white bird." Do white birds get killed by predators more? Also I should mention that we live in Caledon, Ontario and we get our fair share of snow so white would be a better camouflage colour in the winter. Right?

Dumb birds stand out more. Just ask a silkie owner..lol you need a bird that is a good protector. My Bielefelder Rooster sounds the alarm and all my birds, including silkies run. Choose a colour you like.

Re: Chanteclers
white is like Canadian Camo for half the year, well some years. LOL. plus Chanteclars are born n bred in Canada for Canada and the original was the white breed, the partridge is if I remember correctly completely unrelated and should almost be considered a separate breed.
They are both great breeds though and I almost ended up breeding the partridge. I went with standard RIR'S from a great source instead. however thanks to Ross I did have some of the bantam white Chanteclars for a little while. great birds! unfortunately all of those birds were wiped out long ago which.... explains my long absence from the site....
anyways I'm back!
haha

Re: Chanteclers
@Kbr42 is totally right. smart birds watch the skies but really only roosters keep an eye on the sky. we have a great rooster who sounds the alarm and all of them including the rabbits run for cover.
at the old place we had Guineas. they were great alarms. I mean one day every bird went silent. including the Guineas which are usually loud as heck. I came out of the barn to see what was up and found myself in the kill zone of a red tail hawk. full on kill dive and it flew 3 feet beside my head at full speed which is what? like 300KPH! I crapped my pants and then it was almost like all the animals burst out laughing at me as all the racket returned.

Funny thing thing is for a large whute bird my Beltsville turkeys can be sneaky buggers about hiding when they don't want you to find their eggs!
