Well quick update on this years progress ,92 chicks on the ground just turned the first batches outside today. Not using the incubator for reds the rest of this season. I am leaving eggs in nests for some broody hen action I hope. Two more batches of bantam eggs to go in incubator then its shut down time . Good luck everyone

My girls were off to a great start this year. Laying when eggs can freeze if you didn't collect right away you threw them away.
12 chicks on the ground
Than BANG...stop
They have just been able to go out the pop door because there as a huge snow pile. But it has melted and I can get to it and open.
So here is hoping that they will start to lay.....maybe the hint of soil that is FINALLY showing will restart the girls. And the sunshine...

Then it is HATCH every and egg!!!!!

Well raised a lot of reds this year ,very different results than previous yrs. This yr saw great improvement on the pullet side quality wise with a lot of potential keepers. Alas that is not the case with the ckls quality birds are few and the best seem to be from late season hatches. The feather structure issue that appears in reds when getting that dark bing cherry colour is very frustrating . Oh well something else to master or not down the road . Always something to work on breeding reds. Hope you all had a good season and good luck going forward

Hi Bob, pardon my ignorance, but is "ckls" an abbreviation for cockerels?

Im sitting here @ the desk dropping a few lines with a smile on my face and coffee in hand . Four yrs ago I got the first reds sent to me here in BC . As a young man in the hobby Reds where a mainstay in the shows locally, when I came back to the show side they had disappeared. Last nite upon entry 12 birds filled the cages in the class with 3 breeders showing. I am over the moon seeing the interest in the docile standard bred reds 2trios have been sold and birds traded amongst the breeders. The reds have a new start here in BC and for that I am very happy.

Long day just a quick update on the Fraser Valley winter show on how the birds placed. I was very happy with the results 1st place pullet reserve of breed ,1st ckl, 1st cock and best of breed, 2nd place cock. the cock bird went on to win Best American and the pullet won reserve American. This was only the second time I have shown in the last 4 yrs and I was happy with the results.
