Hello....can someone give me a quick primer on how to trim a roosters spurs? Aside from the new holes in my 5yo's leg, the rooster is tripping over them when he walks....can't be that comfortable for him.

thanks!

To go with Ross's pick take a pair of pliers and gently rotate back and forth and the outer sheathing will come off. It is suggested to have some flour on hand to use as blood stop as some will bleed a little.
We do it with two people one to hold Roo and one to use the pliers.

About a week later I use a pedicure roller to blunt down the spur as it's very sharp once the sheath is removed !

A few months ago when I was at a poultry club meeting they used a tool thingy and pulled it off. Like the outside shell or something. Blood of course, but the Roo didn't seem to be in pain or distress. But holy cow, not looking forward to that day.

Thanks everyone....I thought it might be something similar to how we do our cats claws with a nail clipped (only bigger).

Use a Dremel tool with a cutting blade, it will cut right through and cauterize the wound at the same time.
