Do beaks grow back?

Post by GreenriverChicks » Mon Dec 14, 2015 9:43 pm

One of my new cockerels broke his upper beak off. I'm not sure if he can eat very easily.

i have a picture but I'm not sure how to post it. His upper beak is now shorter than the lower. It bled quite a bit.

Yes they do. I know it's pretty scary looking, but he will figure out the food thing eventually just keep an eye on him, you may want to offer some treats to see if he is eating and check that his crop is full.

That's not bad at all, I would keep an eye on how it's coming back in, if it's too uneven you may want to trim it a bit with nail clippers.
He is going to be fine.

Just make sure feed is deep enough in feeder so he can grab with both beaks . Luck

i have a bird running around here with almost the exact same injury except he lost a bit more and it healed up, smoothed out and hes just fine. beaks do grow very slowly so it will take time but he will be just fine!

I think the reason "debeaked" birds don't grow back is because it's a form of cautery, the beak is actually burned, but even then I have seen debeaked birds grow out eventually.
