Well I was watching my chickens and noticed little flies around one of my roosters backside. I had read about fly strike about a month ago and just thought Oh no! Sure enough little tiny maggots around his anus. I took him inside, gave him a bath, removed the maggots, put peroxide on it and then polysporin.
I had heard in this hot weather to watch for it but I have never seen it before. I hated maggots! The things we do for our birds!!! YUCK!!!

It's awful and happens so fast!

Now I have to go look at everyone's butts...

I put some plants in the building where the chickens are. Some had fungus gnats in the potting soil, so I put some of those yellow sticky papers in the pots. The fungus gnats stuck on them and so did several larger flies. I saw somewhere that you can make your own fly catchers by covering a yellow cardboard or heavy paper with something sticky and hanging it or setting it out. They suggested a thin layer of Vaseline. I wonder if honey would work. I don't like those hanging spiral sticky fly traps, I keep running into them. They don't show up much. It's easier to notice yellow.

I had a poor little chickadee getinto one of those hanging strips once. Nightmare to clean the poor thing up.

I had my first experience with fly strike a few days ago as well. I smelled something rotten in the coop and upon investigating it was my nine year old girl Miss Kitty. I caught it very early thankfully. Got maybe 30 maggots off of her. She has a now scabbed hole about the size of a nickel above her vent. She's been staying on the house the past few days to make sure that hole heals up. She would be happy to just move in and stay in. Gross is an understatement

I check their butts everyday. The flys are crazy this year. YUCK!
