Hen not doing well

Post by Farrier1987 » Mon Feb 15, 2016 4:36 pm

And so it ends. A yucky job no one relishes, but you do as you must. She was mostly paralysed left side. No wingbeat, and almost no leg action. Wish I knew what it was. Anybody with any ideas, I would be glad to hear. Hoping it was genetic or brain injury, not bacterial or viral.

Hen not doing well

Sorry....if its viral you will have others shortly. If genetic/brain then you wont....unless you have siblings from the same mom that got the same genetics. Sometimes you will never know. My bet is, with darker comb part, heart or brain. Fingers crossed thats the first and last.

This is the thread I started more than a year ago. I have had three or four since then. I see the signs and they have about a day before I do them in.

I sold two birds in the spring, and one of these developed it about a month after she got them. Anyone any more ideas?

I just reread this post from the start, and I am thinking its a genetic/neural issue. That hen that walks funny is one of the darkest eggs, so many of her eggs set. And the post, says the one that got it was for sure from her, so I am thinking its her genes. She has been a faithful old girl and eve tho she walks funny has never been in distress. Its hared, but it may be time to cull.

How would I get a necropsy done, what might it cost and would they find something like that?

Thanks all.

The University of Guelph does them for a nominal fee.
If she's not in any distress, do you really think you need to cull her yet? I mean, it's not like it's something contagious.

Youre right Jaye. I will just let it be and not set her eggs any more. I wasn't processing thoughts so well last eve.

I was thinking the same thing, especially since you can distinguish between her eggs and the others.

I have a 6-year old dog who has had neuro issues since we got her at 8 weeks. She's been checked out by numerous vets and had all sorts of tests, but everyone has drawn a blank. We pretty much know her limitations and figure that we could spend megabucks visiting specialists and perhaps putting a name to her problem, but if there is no cure it all seems pointless. We could put her down, but she is very sweet, and we choose to live with her limitations.

I think that if I had a chicken like yours, I would choose to live with the problems too, as long as she wasn't in pain.

Does she go broody at all? If so, does she seem to get worse during/right after?
