Chicken MANICURE

Even with FREE Ranging, my chickens get long curled nails.
I use toe nail clippers, but it is a tedious job.
The clippers are not big enough to cut thru the nails.
I must take many little nips front & back & sideways before it's done.

Is there something easier?
I have heard "Dog clippers" but they seem too big.
Taking 1/2 the nail off at once, seems like something could go wrong?
Interested in what others use.

Regular tool man side cutters is what I use . Not to large .

Careful you don't cut into the quick, it's astonishing how much a chicken toenail can bleed. I use dog nail clippers, I just nip off a tiny bit as needed. Better to take off small nips than one big cut, pain though it is.

Never heard of Tool man cutters, but will ask hubby.

YES it's important to watch for the quick!!! Trimmed spur & there was so much blood.
Couldn't sleep all nite! Ran out to the coop about every hour to make sure he was ok ~ now I am Super careful.

Haven't ever seen pedipaw electric, but will check it out as well.
I'm hoping for something that is a "one woman" show.
( Hubby goes into hiding when there's chicken duties - LOL )

BIG THANX for all the suggestions!

Dog nail clippers work very well and come in different sizes.
If you decide to go that route, invest in good quality, makes a world of difference.

i got mine at walmart a few years ago when we first got our dog... about a year after i had birds and needed to trim some crazy nails i was using the regular dog nail clippers and made a couple bleed. Of course i freaked out and stopped the bleeding as i was a complete newb LOL. i thought there has to be a better way... then i remembered the pedipaws, went and grabbed it and it worked like a charm. I also had a hen with a bit of an overgrown beak and it also worked perfectly on her to.

THANK YOU so Freakin' much for the link to the pedipaws "thegawd"
It had a good set of directions, which detailed how to use it.

I did 2 manicures today & have at least another 6 before winter comes.
I'm going to try the dog clippers, but the pedipaws look like a quick way to get a nice rounded edge.
Might even try it on the dog ( & cat ) THANX again

Hey I just read the reviews on the petsmart link and they are terrible... looks like they changed the product to be more safe... hence less power and works like crap, i wouldnt buy something with reviews like that. on the other hand this is essentially a dremmel tool with a very fine sanding head...
