What can make this

happen. Glad it was me and not a customer who cracked this egg.

well it is a fertilized egg, thats what that faint circle is at bottom. I bet it tastes just fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

Definitely fertilized ... But I don't like the blood smear. Drake didn't care.

Thanks Al

LOL. the poor girl that ovulated that one sprang a leak in her oviduct and bled for a little while so the blood streak travelled with the yolk. on a good note, your hen is not an alien green blood hobgoblin hen. she's normal. on another note, it happens very rarely. on a third note, people buying eggs from farmgate should know there will be blood spots and stuff in the eggs, since they aren't all candled and screened.
and yes, perfectly okay to eat.

I once had one that was like opening an egg full of cranberry juice. Never figured out which hen and never happened again but I started breaking my eggs into a bowl before adding them straight to a recipe.

Exactly what I do here too. One at a time.

I ALWAYS crack into a glass before adding, even if it's just a fried egg.

Yep, eggs in a bowl for years. For all that I do, imperfections in an egg turn me off.
