I noticed one of the Wyandotte girls limping today so I picked her up and found that her leg band had slipped, gone around her toe and was digging in under her foot. These are NOT the spiral kind, just the ordinary #11 bandettes. See below.

Now I feel like a horrible chicken Mama for not noticing sooner. I soon whipped it off.

That's an ouch! I've had a hen get the end of a plastic coil stuck in her leg. We had to bandage it.
I'm looking into the velcro (hook and loop fastener) kind. But I would want to make my own.

I like the rounded corners, the way one end slides through an opening in the other end feature, and the back to back hook and loop velcro. There was also a kind with a plastic buckle, but it looked too bulky for poultry.

I have used this type for holding my modelling light to my underwater camera assembly and the backing is very rough (great for my purpose) also the edge is sharp.

Velcro...never would have thought of that! Those 2nd ones look pretty nice! More comfortable for the birds I would think? I can hardly tell my blue girls apart so have been looking at banding options. Thanks!!

Velcro can get dirty.

I will continue to use these numbered bandettes but just keep a closer eye on them. This must just have been a fluke as I've never had a problem before. Also they expand if the bird grows.

Personally I use American Bantam Association sealed bands. They come in a variety of sizes to fit everything from seramas to turkeys. They are permanent and go on the birds at approx the age of 6 weeks. ( some sooner some later depends on the breed and how they grow) . It is on for life and must be cut off with wire cutters if you wish to remove. They are numbered and have the year on them and they rotate the colors of the bands in 7 year intervals. ie this year they are blue .. will be 7 years before they are blue again. A great tool for keeping track of birds from year to year-generation to generation . No more expensive than bandets or metal numbered bands and don't fall off. There is a size chart so you know what size to get for each breed on the website so takes the guess work out of getting the right band for the right breed . You do not have to be a member to order bands from them and they can be ordered off the ABA website at www.bantamclub.com the next years bands will be available in early january although you can order any time now... I have used them for 20 plus years.. and swear by them . Many largefowl and waterfowl breeders use them.

Same type/ style as we use on pigeons Troy. I’ve used for over 60 years aluminum now plastic.

On the topic of legbands...can someone point me to a guide of what size to order? Need some for my Ameraucana pullets/hens.
