OMAFRA and FBC is working with the challenges the owners are facing with this disease. This is a mixed back yard flock with layers ,meat birds and turkeys..

A drop in the eye. It's the Intervet non-shedding type.

I split it with other folks in this area as you can only get it in 10 vial amounts. One vial does 1000 birds but only costs around $30 per vial. I think the vet at U of Guelph can send it. You need 2 vials at least because you do an initial then a booster. You only have 2 hrs to use it once it's reconstituted. Quite a long shelf expiry date if you keep unreconstituted in the fridge. Maybe you can split with others in your area. I only vaccinate for ILT. The one that I use is a "weaker" form and slightly less effective but I feel OK about that.

Here is some info. The second vaccine they mention is the one I use.

I vaccinate faithfully every year .. best time is two weeks after your last hatch as the chicks immune systems have then developed enough to process antibodies.. one needs to remember that this is a live vaccine and a quarentine should be followed fir at least 2 weeks but I prefer 3 weeks .this means no traffic ( visitors or going to others facilities or shows sales etc ) Vaccination is your best and only line of defence . This can be transmitted by air , rodents , wild birds and direct contact . losses can be up to 2/3s of your flock .. very inexpensive to vaccinate when you look at the big picture

Just a bit more on ILT , once exposed, normally healthy birds can harbour the virus for great periods of time .. only to express its self in times of stress .. ie extreme cold and hot weather temperature swings , over crowding of birds , freaqent or extreme location changes ie birds that are in many hands in short periods of times like sales dealers ect .. also constantly being show at multiple shows without giving them breaks .. basically any thing that causes stress . All this can cause the virus to surface in exposed birds that appeared to be healthy as little as a day prior ,signs of the disease are raspy breathing ,gasping an unmistakable caw noise followed by a thick bloody mucus discharge ,not pretty .i have lived through 2 major outbreaks I never want to ever experience again .... that was many years ago but the memory is fresh .my suggestionis for all to vaccinate .
