Oh...just had a closer look at the photos...pull that broken feather shaft out. it may be oozing blood which will cause him to pick. If you pull it right out, it will bleed a little, but be very much better within a few days, and will grow right back.

I was hoping he was a boy as I have three girls that I wanted to put him in with. He and the three girls are now in with my 5 call ducks.....and they are all sorting things out. I had him in a cage of his own but let him out to mingle tonight after I sprayed hi with some blukote. I will see how he is in the morning and have a good look at his wound again. I think it was caused by my other Roo and then he just kept pecking at it. Fingers crossed it heals up fast and he ignores it.

Well this poor guy is in my bathroom again. This time he wont be returning to the coop....just kind of waiting for him to die. I went out to give fresh water and he was curled up in the corner...I honestly thought he was already dead but nope just kind of in a pre-death coma. So I guess I won't be breeding any Orpingtons this spring.

For open wounds like that, a lot of times I use salt. Take a handful like you were going to season the soup, and throw it on the wound, enough to cover all that is open. It does several things. Kills bacteria. Osmosis gets the body sending fluids out instead of allowing them in form outside, dries out the flesh it contacts to start a scab. I have had great luck with it. I am sure it burns for a little while, but sure seems to work. Had a hen ripped open by a neighbors dog, right above the tail, gut wall not punctured but showing. Salted it, and she healed up just fine. Lost her tail, but healed up and feathered over. Two years and about 6 broods of chicks later, she is still doing fine.
