haha ya shes the only turkey that has jumped the fence and the only bird that thinks the road is fun. I have one extra pen and its got extra roosters in it. I do have that massive barn but there are no closeable doors on it and no plans yet to renovate but the plans are in the making. I'm going to cover the 3500 square foot run and completely finish the coop first but its not in the budget yet.

a few hours ago I finished clipping her wing and so far, knock on wood, shes still in, along with her poults. I hope this works!

AHHH I just seen the last few posts.... I just bought like 12000 yards of fishing line from the dollar store for $5 and its garbage sooooo I'll use it for the top... great idea!

oh ya the poults can fly, almost as good as an adult. it seems like the beltsvilles can fly as soon as they have feathers. flying up 6 feet is no problem at all for these little guys LOL. I just hope they forget LOL. HAHA

Yep...once a female has known freedom (or has had her own car) its pretty hard to coop her in.

I have found with chickens that if taking the feathers off one wing doesn't do it, take half the tail feathers on the same side. Yes, throwing them off balance is the thing, and they use the tail as a rudder, so you are throwing it off even more. Guaranteed to work every time except for the times it doesn't.

Funny you should say that, the other day I was admiring my Buckeye hen close up as she was staring up at me, and I noticed that the way their heads and eyes are angled, they must have a decent amount of binocular vision. Another hen thought that would be a great time to peck the Buckeye right in the eye. Those third eyelids must be on some kind of reflex, there was no injury at all even though I saw it clearly, the peck was right in the eyeball. No damage done fortunately. Yikes!
Actually the eyes stick out of the head and some birds have a huge range of vision: mallards in flight see 360 degrees!

well after 4 days momma hen and her poults are still in the run! WOOOHOOO! She can jump about 4' no problem so I had to move some stuff around and remove the "steps." It would also seem that she has remembered that the coop contains fresh water and food at all times. LOL. shes been truly free ranging for a couple months now, but not anymore!
