Fatty Liver Autopsy- Part 2- guts part- WARNING- GRAPHIC!!! Advice needed

Thanks WLLady. I did not check the whites of her eyes (too late for that) but WWW I did dig her up and the kidneys were almost the same yellowish colour as the liver, not sure if they would change colour after being dead for a while- and perhaps a bit bigger than I thought chicken kidneys should be. WLLady I didn't see anything that looked like hemmorhages on the outside, but I didn't cut or look that closely.
In retrospect I did botch the autopsy, I was really expecting gallons of fluid to gush out and was really surprised when there was none- I didn't have a good plan B.
Next time hopefully there isn't one, but I have her chicks so you never know. I'll try and do a better job. I can just picture myself with the chicken belly up on the morgue slab, the skull cut open with a saw and the brain in the scale ;-)
Sorry just a bit of black humour, actually I am very sad, I am very sorry  to lose this hen. I felt badly that I had killed her for just being fat, but now I do feel a little bit better thinking she really did have serious issues.

One of my hens died a while ago and she was heading towards being too fat. The autopsy was a good heads up but she did spend a lot of time by the feeder.

What breed of hen was she KB?
This hen was broody for the past two weeks, I tossed her off the nest twice daily (no eggs were being brooded) just to get out and stretch, but she would head back to the nest almost immediately after a few quick mouthfuls of food and a drink- - the weird thing is, that lump of fat on her bum was growing a lot during that time, so I wonder how that could happen with very little food? How do you grow fat on starvation rations? Weird.

Wyandotte cross Australorp. I don't think this was like yours, I think as Kathy said metabolic disorder for yours. If she'd gone broody everything is out of whack with hormonal changes and it doesn't take a lot to put organs like the liver into problems, it is so important with so many functions.

You didn't kill her for just being fat! You noticed she was failing, and liver failure is awful...the organs shut down one at a time, it's not a nice way to go! if she wasn't laying, she wasn't thriving, you did the right thing. The kidneys being yellow means they too were shutting down. I think you spared her a longer painful lingering death. I'm really really sorry that you lost her, but I think you did the right thing-AND more importantly you looked to see what was going on, to see if something you could change would have made it better, or will help her kids if it's genetic. Unfortunately I do not think you can change anything. I would keep an eye on the kids and if they start looking like this get them on a lower protein lower fat diet (no seeds kinda thing) and see if that might slow it down. Liver metabolism problems are quite commonly genetic....but if she was not bred to a sibling or parent then hopefully her kids will be just fine.

sorry you lost her. but i think you did great, a lot of people don't even bother to look, would have assumed ascites and heart disease and never have known.

:iagree: You didn't botch the necropsy, either, it told you what you needed to know. It was an awesome job for a first time or a fiftieth. She was broody, had loads of yellow fat, had a congested liver AND had eggs in various stages of ripening. Her hormones were all out of whack and she was on the verge of catastrophe--if she didn't just suddenly sicken and die from toxins, ascites would have been next from blocked blood flow in liver, or kidney damage or both. Or she would've simply starved to death from an inability to process nutrients/break down proteins.
You did everything right.
Hormones control pretty much everything in our bodies, including metabolism. Thyroid insufficiency is a prime suspect if a person ( or animal) has lost appetite but is gaining weight.
You did the hen a kindness and helped all of us learn something, things that not everyone have the courage to do. RIP, mama hen.
