Copper deficiency?

I like the pelletted stuff too-less waste than shovelling crumbles lol. If i give too many boss or too much scratch i get a bunch of sharks following me around and not laying anything lol plus i am too cheap to buy scratch anymore. Ted is a messy horse-they can get his dropped oats and corn in winter lol

Copper deficiency?

Ok, my 2 cents worth on complete feed: We have a mare with EMND, She needs 5000UI of Vit E daily. Our Vet hooked us up with the Vit E from a feed company, which is a synthetic vitamin. She would need 2 oz per day. It is only $80 for a 25 kg bag vs. the $50 for a 25 day supply of a natural form of Vit E. After seeing the difference in the effects of the synthetic Vit E that is used to make complete feed vs the natural form Vit E I have really re-thought my feed choses. The poor horse had tremors so bad after a week it was scary. Each to their own, and I am not suggesting anyone should boycott complete feeds. I'm just sharing my experiences.

Well I finally got my Vionate for pets in. I ordered the 2 pound jar. Well just so you know, it's a jar of degermed corn meal with the vitamins mixed in. The "vItamin and mineral powder" is misleading on the label, I expected vitamin and mineral powder not cornmeal. Ugh. I suppose that makes it convenient to mix in with chicken feed but it's an extremely expensive way to buy vitamins and minerals, Next time I'm just going to buy a large jar of multivitamin and mineral tablets from the drug store and powder them up or see if i can find a real powdered mineral supplement elsewhere. I can buy a 2 pound bag of corn meal from the Food Basics for a couple of bucks if I need a carrier. :-/

WLL,

Your selenium talk has peeked my interest. Do you add a supplement with selenium or just make sure it is listed in the feed ingredients?

In the "old days" selenium was highly regulated and difficult to get approval to supplement. Western Grain naturally had more selenium content so the feed formulators included them into the rations if they wanted to boost the selenium content.

If you buy a commercial feed it will be supplemented with selenium in the feed....i just feed commercial feed. I was looking into doing my own feed but since sodium and other trace minerals are commonly deficient in the normal grains and legumes i would constantly be paranoid of vit b, sodium and selenium deficiencies. Theres already enough things to watch out for with chickens lol
