Chickens chucking corn
Chickens chucking corn
Why do chickens chuck the corn out of their food bowl? I thought chickens liked corn. This is a good organic mix, but I'm wondering if there is something else that I should be feeding them without corn in it?

Either that, or the corn itself is old and no longer very palatable to them.
I feed organic mixed grains too, and corn is part of the mix. Mine eat it all, including the corn.

It could be that it's getting to the end of its shelf-life too Jaye. We didn't notice a problem until we opened the last bag. Same brand as before, but who knows?

In that case, I would bet that it's because the corn is stale. It's cracked corn, right? Cracked corn goes stale much faster than whole corn kernels.

Yes Jaye, it is cracked corn with some whole kernels included (still rejected, even when offered by hand).
I wonder when this year's harvest will hit the feed stores....

Maybe your chickens are just not feelin "corny" these days. It is their "Blah, Blah" season after all.
Try cracking them a few jokes and see if it helps.

Re: Chickens chucking corn
I have gone back to whole corn and wheat mix. In the feeder, I try to let it get right empty before I feed more, or at least once every few days. That seems to help make them not as picky. Because I often feed on the ground, I think a lot of cracked corn gets wasted, the whole seed, if they miss it, it has a chance of sprouting and growing, and they will get it then.
