Of course chickens can be optimistic. If I go outside and sit down Miss Wonky Toe will come and sit by us or just under the chair because she knows there will likely b a piece of muffin or toast heading her way. She also learned to arrive very quietly and take her treats with never a cluck or call like the other chickens often make. She knows this means more for her. Or am I overthinking this?

I think you’re bang on KB. And it only makes sense to me that any living being benefits from a varied and interesting environment.

Same here, couple of the Ameraucana hens have gotten so insistent, because DH always has some goodies in his pockets, and now I only take coffee in the paddock, and if I don't pay attention they try to get in to my pocket, in a "come on hand it over" sort of way.
Wouldn't dare to bring in a sandwich. :)
