Sorry for you loss Happy and it is unfortunate for your niece.
I'm with Ontario Chick about whether or not to inform someone on vacation of bad news until they return home. I have had this conversation with others when I've been asked if they should inform the person on vacation of someone's passing. I have advised no, If there isn't anything the person can do about it, why ruin their vacation. Unfortunately my advice has not always been heeded.
