Yes, age plays a huge part. If the pullets are not yet sexually mature, red sex links will do their best to draw blood and kill them, and eat them. They'll do the same with cockerels, they're not sexist lol. Hatchery Barred Rocks can be pretty vicious too. To a chicken, blood is blood, meat is meat, and a young, inexperienced interloper that can't get away from them is a perfect target. Personality plays a big part too...I can introduce young EE's to the layers MUCH MUCH younger than Orpington or Giant chicks.
