I have silkies, EE's and Barred Rocks. The barred rocks are clearly dominant girls and can be bitchy if allowed. But never to me or another human, dogs or buns the adopted flock-mate.

My EE's are super sweet, docile and love a chest rub. They will do whatever it takes to get to me first when I go outside, before any others.

I've had Columbian Rock X's, and although I only had them into 'teenage stage' they were sweet, inquisitive and always up to no good (except one that got rehomed) but they were just like obnoxious teenagers.

Then we have silkies. Such adorable, adorable sweet little characters. I just adore them. My Silkie Roo 'attacked' my 'new to them boots' but at first I just thought he tripped and fell. Nothing vicious about them. I do have a bossy pants in the Silkie flock, but she's not even on the same scale as my bossy pants barred rock that has to go in time out every other flipping day!

Pretty funny how everyone is completely under a spell of the breed they raise.
I suspect everybody chose a breed best suited to their own temperament and the goals they are trying to achieve.
Although "lap" chicken may be ideal to some, you wouldn't want 50LF trying to get on your lap at the same time.
I raise Wyandottes because they fit perfectly in to my plan of "Free range lawn ornaments" friendly but "standoffish'
and Ameraucanas, they are fiendish on free range and could be trained to do anything, or possibly could train you, to do anything. :)
One thing that never ceases to amaze me, when the pullets are added to the main flock, even going thru period when they are together outside and go in to their own coop for the night, the NEVER forget who is their hatch-mate and who isn't. I have watched two identical looking hens beak to beak giving each other the Evil eye and check their bands, sure enough one is a 2 year old and one is a 3 year old, you would think by now they wouldn't be able to tell, if they didn't have bands, I certainly couldn't. :idunno:

So true OC. I won't have Australorps again because of the aggressiveness I found esp the boys. I think it may have been the line I had but it's easy to get turned off a breed in a hurry.

That's the thing it's so personal. The 2 boys and 2 of the girls were a nightmare for aggression but the X kids are great.

I do agree with Cochins being one of the friendliest breeds...but I think it depends on what you define as friendly? My Cochins follow me everywhere...and I mean everywhere!, I was cutting branches that had over grown the driveway a bit...which is was about 400 450 meters from the house and coop. After about 20 minutes of cutting I heard some rustling (actually startled me)...and there they were...when I'm outside they don't seem to think they need their rooster anymore lol! But they are not too fond of being touched...they take it but it's more like when you force a child to hug that Aunt that always over does it and tries to pinch your cheeks. Lol

This is Megan...
She is an Easter Egger I hatched this past spring...she is the first at the door and refuses to let me by until I pet her. I really mean pet...get right down to the feather shafts (kinda like a dog would like). This summer while still with her siblings the boys would pick on her occasionally, I'd go over say Megan! She'd come running and I'd scoop her up and carry her around a little while giving her a little pet. Now I don't usually name my birds but this one is special and I'll probably keep her more as a pet, and because she was born on my sisters birthday I named her megan after my sister.

My ameraucana (B,B,S)are super friendly my lavender ameraucana not so much. Love my polish as well, super friendly when handled all the time or super nosey if not handled. Silkies I found friendly as well , but they are just an overall more docile breed.

I got 2 Euskal Oiloa pullets from Flat Rock Farm and I must say have never had chickens that have adapted to their new surroundings and fit in so quickly. They are actually a bit nosy. Lol
:smilewithrooster:
Yes Colleen they are nosy, they like to see what your doing and if you have any treats!!! LOL

It's unfortunate that those EO's only have big single combs- I did some reading on that breed a while ago, and was very interested in them. Seems that they are universally nice friendly birds.
I should cross some with a Buckeye rooster....... LOL maybe in time I will.
