How long does it take for a rooster to figure out his job?

Post by Jenny d » Tue Apr 21, 2020 12:18 pm

Hello,
I got a silkie rooster a few weeks ago who is about 6 months old because I really wanted to brood some babies this spring from my flock that I have had for 4-5 years. He's very sweet, and lovely colours and has started to work his magic with the ladies, but he is terrible at it.
I watched him get on backwards twice last night, and DH is starting to think he has a neck fetish.
At this rate I am never going to get fertilized eggs. :-(
How long does it take for a feathered gentleman to figure things out?
I am thinking of just getting hatching eggs this year instead.

I have never raised silkies, but I know they sometimes clip feathers around the vent of hens and roos to get a better connection.

Six months is still kinda young. He's still figuring things out. Let's hope he gets his act together 🤣

Competent employees should get more than minimum wage.
