Quarantine...or lack thereof

I live on a few acres but don't really have a suitable location or set up to quarantine any new birds. I want to grow my flock by adding some purebreds, but trying to consider the best way to do it safely. Of course, I'm not very patient...but trying my best. I ASSUME the safest way would be to wait...

Patience is not my strong suit....

So.....Hubby said I'm getting a new coop!! Bigger...much bigger!! Problem is that its not coming until "sometime in the summer". Seriously...he tells me I can have more chickens...but then he tells me I have to wait??! Ugh! You know I'm dying to buy some chicks, or have one of my ladies to go broody...

Meet Peach!

Peach is the only pullet out of a hatch of 5 eggs. My first ever hatch...and it was probably lucky to have happened. I had bought ready-to-lay pullets in April, just mis -matched pretty barnyard mixes. By August, Speckles went broody. I didnt realize that was kinda a rare thing and so I borrowed som...

Re: What's missing from the forum??

I'm a relative newbie and Ill give my two cents (cause I'm sticking around whether you like it or not! lol) I'm on the Backyard Chickens site (its busy!) and I'm an avid facebook user and belong to almost every Ontario based poultry site (all the ones I can find anyway) and it was in one of those FB...

Sounds like a very thorough inspection is warranted. Speckles isn't going to like this...lol

Bluest of blue?

I desperately want some blue egg layers! And not just blue, the bluest of blue! lol I've seen everything from pale-barely-blue, to must-be-photo-enhanced-blue, while searching sales ads. I dont really care what breed, but I'm leaning towards Ameraucanaa (I really like the splash & blues) or possibly...

Is a messy bottom sometimes just a messy bottom?

I've noticed 2 of my hens have quite dirty bottoms. Poop stuck all over. The others backsides seem normal. I did notice a sneeze from one of the messy girls this morning. They all seem healthy, eating, and foraging, and laying. The one messy one also had a messy backside last summer, just before she...
