Re: Good Morning - 2023

7 of the 9 eggs hatched successfully. The 2 that didn't never pipped. The chicks are now in the brooder with the keets. All are getting along famously.

Re: Good Morning - 2023

Good morning. Last night I put 9 chicken eggs into Lockdown - 3rd time with incubating this year. A few weeks ago, a raccoon killed 23 of our young birds - barnyard mix and Rustic Rangers. The new outside Fort Knoxed pen wasn't Fort Knoxed quite enough. When hatched, they will join the guinea keets ...

Re: 2023 veggie garden

I love Burgundy bush beans; they keep their shape and turn bright green when cooked. The other beans are doing well. We have had troubles with bugs again this year. They got the best of the zucchini plants. I'm not sure if DH injected the main stems with a bug killer this year. Looking after the pla...

Guess what appeared?

This morning, when I went out to feed the birds, there was a guinea that did not make it into the yard last night. It was chirping and pacing back and forth at the fence. Then I saw some movement inside - keets! The hen showed up with 11 keets. And they are more than day-olds. Most of them went thro...

Re: Early Birds

A couple of days ago, we moved the keets into a coop that has a small pen attached. They spent more than a day up on the roost, but today we heard them pecking away at the food. That is a good sign. The young chickens and Rustic Rangers that also had access to the coop are outside in the pen. In goo...

Re: Early Birds

In conclusion: 16 eggs were set; 3 were not viable; that left 13 eggs incubating. Out of the 3 we helped out of the shell, 2 are doing well. Thanks for the spritzing suggestion, thegawd , it worked out really well. 9 out of the 13 are in the brooder; the last one that was pipped for a couple of days...

Re: Early Birds

Update #2: There are 3 eggs left to hatch out of 13. Of the 2 zipped eggs from the post above, one didn't make it and the other won't last much longer. This morning, I helped another non-progressing zipped egg in 3 quick stages of cracking open the lid. It is doing well, and 2 more hatched on their ...

Re: Early Birds

Update:
There are 4 hatched chicks and 2 that are zipped. The 2 that are zipped, however, have been that way since yesterday. There is movement, though. But that means that the 4th hatched chick out pipped and zipped these other 2.
There is no sign of pipping in the other 7 eggs yet.

Early Birds

This is a first for me. This is lockdown day for the guinea eggs in the incubator. When I first went to check on the humidity, as I usually do first thing in the morning, I found that an egg was pipped. As quickly as I could, I removed the turner and put all the eggs on the incubator floor. That's w...
