Re: Barred Rock?
How much space do they have? Pecking is sometimes an issue of being to cramped or requiring more protein in the diet.
My choice would be barred rock too...I've only had once of each, but the BR was very sweet.

Don't tell my husband...
 currently have 34 eggs under broody hens :broodyhen: In hindsite, a dozen is too many for my girls, as I see eggs peaking out all the time, so Im not expecting a full hatch from those 2 girls. But the one I gave 10 to is covering them nicely, though I had to give her some older eggs (dated b...

Hens leaving chicks early this year?
Ive had 2 broodies this year, and both have left their chicks at about 3 weeks old. Just completely abandoned them. One of the same hens kept her babies for 8 weeks last year, so Im a little surprised at what happened this year. Chicks are healthy and growing and both batches huddle together in one ...

Re: First Timer Broody Hen Questions
I had a hen this year kill all her blue chicks, and only keep a black chick, then abandoned it after 3 weeks. She wont be allowed to go broody again! Yet my other hen will sit on everything, and even somewhat adopted the 3 week old chick and added it to her 6 that are a week younger! They have such ...

Re: First Timer Broody Hen Questions
All my broodies raise their chicks in the flock with no issues. I currently have 2 batches of chicks in the main coop with the other 10 chickens. Naver had an issue. The Mamas will let the other chickens know that the babies are off limits - there is nothing fiercer than a mama hen! lol When I have ...

Re: Not very smart...
They all have a blue-ish tinge to them. Mine is pure white/yellow with the black spots. Hmmm, this could be interesting! lolOntario Chick wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2019 12:05 pmSome splash chicks of various quality

Yes, its feet are pure yellow. Oh boy...well, I will just label all 6 in this hatch as EE. I will keep you posted on her progress/growth
@Ontario Chick I would love to see some splash chick pics, most of what I can find are just the adult photos

Not very smart...
So I let Peach hatch 6 eggs, 3 would be Pure Ameraucana, and 3 would be EE's. I didnt check my genetics calculator and all the EE babies will be black or blue, and the Ameraucana will be lack, blue or splash. 1 splash...has to be pure Ameraucana 2 black with white trim...think those are the other 2 ...
