Most people get birds from a hatchery. Hatchery birds are bred to lay eggs; and "purebred" of any breed may be crossbred with something more productive to get egg numbers up. Thus you get birds where feathers might look right but body shape is way off. Hatcheries don't care for other characteristics...

I've been in and out of a lot of breeds. Given our winters, I wanted a rose or pea comb bird. I had dark cornish, great birds, and given their size and muscle they could go feral and fly pretty good. good mothers, and reasonable layers - but the feed bill was unreal.
