Guinea fowl saga continues

Back on Aug 16th, on anther thread, I had posted that I found where a guinea hen was sitting on about 24 eggs in tall grass in the field. We had decided to leave it alone to see what happens. Since then, I had seen the hen once or twice off the nest, heard her calling out to the other three, etc. To...

Re: Good Afternoon from Warwick Twp ON.

Welcome! And yup! This is the place to ask questions.
We do not raise our own meat chickens, but we do buy day olds every year and process them ourselves. Same with turkeys.

Re: What is left in your veg garden ?

Where to begin... Still have a few cukes here, too and a couple of zucchini. Plus, we still have tomatoes, peppers, beets, carrots, Swiss chard, kale, parsley, maybe 1 cabbage left, eggplant, rutabaga, and only a couple of pie pumpkins and squash. The squash did not do well this year; the cucumbers ...

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits

Jumping forward 5 days since the last post - There are about 20 eggs in the nest, and I do not remember when I last saw only 4 guineas, which would mean the other one is on the nest. And the weather has gotten cooler and rainy. Those eggs will probably not hatch. It's no wander guinea owners just ga...

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits

Currently: One of the RIR cockerels is protecting the 2 keets from the guinea fowl - it jumped on one then charged it. The keets do not go far from this little cockerel. The cockerel also jumped on a turkey, holding onto its neck for a few seconds. Also, I was right about the disappearing guinea fow...

Thinking of Winter Bug Nutrition

My local feed store has 3 lb bags of mixed grains with mealworms and black soldier fly larvae from Croque En Bec in Quebec, so I decided to try it. The birds loved it, of course. Then I got notification from Chubby that they have stock back in, plus they advertise that the BSF are grown in Canada. T...

RIR Cockerel & Guinea Keet Observation

With our 10 RIR chicks (2 cockerels, 8 females) being 9 weeks old, and the 2 guinea keets about 8 weeks, we have started letting them out into the yard at large. This is while our regular flock is out free ranging, too. The guinea fowl are always out lately. When 2 guineas came to check out the 2 ke...

Re: Good Morning

The deer got one of my hosta, too, and ate the flower buds. They already got some of the leaves. I forgot to spay with Bobbex the other night, and I don't want to spray when it's about to rain. A previous day, they ate the bud off a sedum that I haven't seen bloom yet. Darn deer!

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits

UPDATE: The runt of the 3 keets died a few days ago. Given that hatching conditions were less than perfect, we were not surprised. Now that we moved the meat chickens out of the brooder, the 2 remaining keets were let out of their circular section and are mingling well with the RIR chicks. They even...
