Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits
As the saying goes, "...and that was that".... sort of. By my count, this was Day 38 since the hens started sitting on the eggs. At around 8 pm tonight, I went to the barn, shooed the hen off the nest, and candled the eggs. There was no sign of life in all 36 eggs, so I took them away. Then the hen ...

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits
Here are a couple of photos taken early on. The hens started laying their eggs in the barn after unsuccessfully making a nest outside in the field. The chickens did not bother them as far as I could tell. When the hens were on the nest, there was always a male guinea in the barn with them. eggs-2.jp...

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits
Killerbunny - keeping in mind this is just my own experience with brooding guinea fowl. By my count, today is Day 29 or so since the guinea hens started sitting on the eggs. When I went into the barn at around 5:30 to set out food for the chickens, and gather eggs, there was no guinea hen on the eg...

Re: 2022 is the Year of the Garden in Canada
The deer ate a couple of my potted tuberous begonias. I was thinking there is enough to eat out there; leave my plants alone.

Here is the keet enclosure. Too bad the heat lamp always makes a red photo.

Time to Grab the Camera
Today, DH found a surprise in the grass.... because he nearly stepped on it as he was headed to the vehicle he needed to use.

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits
So far, we have counted 6 hatches - 3 live and 3 were found dead (2 of which did not look dried off but were away from the nest). That is why, from now on, we will be grabbing any fluffy keet we see and putting it with the other keets. DH made a circular enclosure that is in the big brooder so the l...

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits
This morning, there was another keet that had hatched and is sitting by the heat lamp, with a few unhatched eggs, away from the guinea hen.
We'll most likely grab it and put it with the other one, in the small enclosure, in the large brooder with the week old chicken chicks.

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits
Interesting development: 1. I saw a keet peek out from under a hen; 2. When I went to gather eggs from the nesting boxes above the guinea nest, I noticed 2 dead keets and removed them; 3. DH installed a heat lamp very near the nest, and directed toward the eggs; 4. We witnessed a keet go out from un...

Re: guinea fowl laying and brooding habits
This morning, out in the barn, there was a broken guinea fowl egg out of the nest. When my hand went down to pick it up, I got a guinea hen growl. I do believe there is some success, so far, with the broody guinea hens.
