Re: New little mommy

Not to be out done by her full sister, this little hen also just hatched eleven chicks, which was a surprise since I only let her have 9 or 10 eggs, she added extra in after lol.

Another hen hatched eleven chicks.
She has already proven herself, she successfully raised chicks in March.

Were there 11 eggs in the nesting box, or did you place more under her?
She sat on eleven eggs, she was covering them well so I let her keep all eleven. I was hoping for 8 or 9 chicks but it was 11 so 100% hatch!

New little mommy

This little hen Sat on eleven eggs and since they seemed fertile I left them all, she hatched out eleven chicks! I think that is the most I ever let one have.

If I wanted a project.

If I was going to work on a breeding project, I think it would be interesting to infuse some leghorn into my Easter egger bantams. Improve the laying a little more, they wouldn't be much bigger and hopefully cut down on the number of hens wanting to hatch. I think I would get super duper laying bant...

Re: The best part about poultry

Yep until last night, I would agree that watching them doing their chicken thing is the best thing ever. I still haven't found an answer to the question of whether it is too cold at night to let my three plus week old chicks stay out over night, so I let them run in the sun by day and take them bac...

Re: Ottawa area auctions.

Actually to be honest I like to go but I don't buy any more, maybe hatching eggs but that is it. I'm not telling anyone else what to do but as for myself I don't buy from auctions anymore. I am enjoying the mutts I have right now and I don't want to flubb that up. Almost every hen decided to hatch a...

Re: What are chickens worth?

I am not that interested in selling them, I could do with a few less, I didn't think $15 was that unreasonable, these same people probably spend $500 on their next phone but feel farm prices should be like back in the 1950's. If they want eggs they can go suck one!

Re: What are chickens worth?

Well... so I have had people ask to buy some of my Easter egger bantams. They are actually good layers, most lay green, some blue and some cream white. All are ten months or younger. I could sell some, I don't need all. The thing is I ask $15 each. People think that's too high. I don't think so, eve...

Re: End of an era.

I pass by this guy's farm every day on my way to work, he sold all the cows and moved to a newer house. The farm looks abandoned, it has always been a busy farm all my life, so sad to see. The trouble was he just couldn't get reliable help. Very stressful if you have to take your kid to the hospital...
