Re: File this under gross.

I must have been behind the times and just caught up this summer...I honestly never knew any of this...it has been one heck of an experience.

Re: File this under gross.

My son used to do arborist work and I have found many ticks in my shower. I worried about him so much back then. This summer I have figured out there are sooooo many things to worry about it could drive us crazy if we knew half of them. I had a lady come to buy chicks this spring...she was telling m...

Re: published an eBook

That's awesome KimChick! I took a course years ago on writing children's books...and they are really not as simple to write as they seem!

Re: New Coop?

I have a whirly thing...I raised my coop 20" and put a "run" underneath....and I still have one corner that gets damp. My whirly thingy doesn't make noise that I notice. I really need to figure out how to ventilate that area better. The problem is that my coop doesn't ventilate west/east...and I KNE...

Re: Flock of Speckled Sussex, with a problem

I've dealt with that issue a few times. Only thing that works is putting curtains on the nest boxes to darken them, and put golf balls in them. Hens get tired of pecking golf balls that give the a headache. Within a few days it usually stops. Otherwise...I have a flock of Heritage RIR I would consid...

Re: Deviled eggs?

Marauding herds

Ugh as if the moles aren't bad enough, I have a two year old boxer that is ripping up all the grass digging huge holes looking for them. Very frustrating. And on top of that a territorial robin who fights his reflection in my windows ALL DAY LONG.

chicken math

When my husband convinced me to move into town (THAT lasted a year, even though we had built a brand new house) But anyway, back to the story...I built a shed...and I built a coop in said shed. Then before I bought chickens I tested the neighbours reactions, by telling the whole block my plan to hou...

chicken math

So far this spring... I bought a trio of red cochin bantams, then a pair of lemon cuckoo orpingtons, then a trio of RIR and a quad of RIR. Then I added in some barred rock but they aren't here yet, so I filled the pen that was supposed to be theirs with a pair of Americans and a quad of EE's, AND ad...

Best way to prevent pests

If the chickens can't get under there, throw some mothballs in underneath. They tend to keep most things away. Don't use too many, you don't want to smell them INSIDE the coop. Start with a couple where there is obvious entry
