the good news on the farm...
We do have some good news on the farm. We have a Rustic Ranger hen that was badly injured from rooster spurs. We isolated her with a frantic/paranoid Barred Rock that also needed to regrow a lot of feathers. That went well, and they both got along and healed. Then we put the Rustic Ranger with the y...

Re: a guinea fowl event
That leaves us with 3 groups of guineas, from oldest to youngest: The group of 5; the group of 8; and the group of 6, which makes 19 guinea fowl.

Re: a guinea fowl event
Sadly, none of them survived. The hen was being a good momma, but this time of year is just too darn cold.

a guinea fowl event
Well, it happened... again. A guinea hen was nesting; we never found out where. She would show up every other day, or so, to eat (we didn't keep track). After a long while, and a noticeable, recent 3 day absence, she showed up with her brood of 10 keets. It was good timing because we were shifting s...

Watching the guineas
Today, I watched my guineas do something that I was wondering if I'd ever see. All 8 young guineas flew up into a maple tree. They did have some motivation. Three older guineas were chasing them, thankfully not at full speed, otherwise they may have ended up on the road. They did come down after a w...

The only other exercise that I do regularly (if you want to call it that) is go out to the barn to feed the birds and collect eggs.Ontario Chick wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 9:18 amDarn all you energetic people, I make my bed in the morning and think : this counts as exercise, right?

Re: Good Morning - 2023
Speaking of exercise, I have to check when our local arena will have their ice in. Then I can get to the Friday morning adult skate. They let me plug in my phone to the sound system so I can play my music and skate.

Re: single hen
Lock um in for a week I agree. And put their food and water in there. That way, they know where the food is. To get our chickens to go into their fenced-in yard, we sometimes need to herd them in (slowly) by using a couple of broom sticks and we always say, "In ya go" as we do that. They have gotte...

What kind kale? I refuse to eat or grow curly kale, but love the red russian kale. First green in the spring, last in the fall. Seeds itself like dill, so easy to grow. let it start then transplant where you want it. DH said he planted Italian kale. I prefer the curly kale because the leaves are la...
