Robbie wrote:QR_BBPOST I'm going to have to find some of that, I'm sure it's growing somewhere!
You won't have to look far- it grows almost everywhere much to the disgust of commercial farmers who pay a lot to get rid of it!!

quinoa for chickens

It's a relative of amaranth and pig weed. I let the pig weed go to seed around here because the turkeys love it and head straight for the seed heads when they're out. It's amazing how many weeds like this are actually essential feed sources for wildlife and we often ignore them their potential as fe...

Comb and wattle inventory after the Big freeze...

This cold snap was brutal for some of my Roos. The light Sussex roo now has most of his comb and wattles affected. The Hampshire roo seemed fine yesterday but he too has some on his comb and quite a bit now on his wattles. The silver pencilled Hamburg has quite a bit on his wattles which surprised m...

Good Morning!

I heard today that they were moving 2200 sheep! I thought you might know them Waupoos Cowgirl, since they're right by Waupoos.
They have livestock guardian dogs in with the sheep, plus moving them around I suspect helps too as the coyotes can't get used to a routine.

Good Morning!

Sunny and still cold here but the worst is over thank goodness. All have come though it well except the poor light Sussex roo who's comb (what was left of it from last winter) now has serious frostbite on the rest of it and wattles arghh. Poor fellow, may have to put him out of his misery. Very nice...

Well winter is back here in full- had a nice even, light 3 or so inches this am then about 9 am the west wind picked up and is now vertical and forecast to get 15 cm or so and snow squalls off the lake. Had planned to go to town but that may be off for the day! Chickens very happy to stay inside, bu...

Hope you can figure it out. We have a 4 bedroom old farmhouse with a barn. Our bill for Jan (Dec 22-Jan 23) was $281 (actual meter readings). We have the usual appliances and a water and sump pump and electric hot water heater. Try and use the dryer off peak, but have low watt lights in the barn and...

Good Morning!

My jennys have been laying since the end of December, and though I've been collecting them I don't want to incubate any now either. I had very good luck with Broodie's for the turkeys, better than letting the turkeys do it but prefer to take them away once hatched to get them friendlier. The one bro...
