Ethics of selling to city people
Interesting comments and experiences. I never thought to ask about end of life. The person replied back after I said no so I'll ask that idea anyway. Just for edumucation purposes. Bantams only in Sarnia. That's funny. Like you said bylaw wouldn't likely know the difference. A composter should be ab...

Ethics of selling to city people
Good Morning We sell chicks and have sold ducklings in the past. I'm curious what if any restrictions people use or think should be applied when selling to city people. I just had someone from Mississauga who wanted chicks. Mississauga does not allow chickens. I'm all for backyard chickens even if t...

sex linked by coincidence?
Hi All Thanks for the great input. Thanks WLLady for the great explanation. Sorry I haven't posted pics until now. Kept forgetting to shoot them. To put his size in perspective, the rooster is beside ISA Brown hens. The hen is obviously the grey one. The chicks are 17 weeks old. The cockerels need a...

Mysterious disappearance, predator?
I'd bet it's a mink. Especially if you have a creek or river nearby. A mink or weasel will chew through the back of the neck to the spinal cord. We lost 22 layers to a mink over 10 days. One night it killed 9 and took 4 heads. A mink could easily take away those chicks. Either way I'd set a trap in ...

sex linked by coincidence?
Hi All Earlier this spring we bred a Buff Brahma rooster to a dark Brahma hen. Now that the chicks are 4 months old it's very obvious they are sex linked. We didn't breed for this. We just liked the colour of the buff Brahma rooster more than the dark so bred that way. We have 7 cockerels that are d...

Serious chicken math misunderestimation! Help
For the barn you may want to look up Ohio brooders. They can hold a lot of birds with little energy.

Update. A few days after this post one of the hens started sitting. She started the day after I hung heavy dark fabric in front of the nest. She is likely sitting on 19 or 20 eggs. The guy I bought them from had a broody sit on 21 and hatch 20 last year. I've only seen her once in the last week and ...

Egg Cartons
We find most people don't return them. Pullets Plus sells them in bundles of 100. I think they're about $25/ bundle. We only bought them once. Too much money and the hinges were really brittle. We ask for them on freecycle. It's a sharing/swapping forum. You have to offer something for free before y...

How much do you charge for 1 dozen eggs?
I think most of us lose touch with the price of eggs in stores. At Whole Foods in Oakville, the "small flock delight" were $7.09/doz last time I looked. Nothing special except they ave some free range. Most people selling at the road would probably be surprised what they can sell for if they are nea...
