Brown egg layers
:PTO: I have had Freys RIR'S for 3 years. They are not laying nearly as many eggs as my leghorns. Would breeder raised chickens give me better lay rate? I also wonder if the low lay rate could be caused by non-commercial housing (not climate controlled). Would I do better with australorpes or anothe...

Re: Artisanal Chicken Program
We are signed up to start in spring. The inspection was pretty easy. Paperwork will be a breeze compared to our organic certification. We can raise them out on pasture in portable pens just like we have been doing. The only thing that it prevents us from doing that we used to do is to have any other...

Livestock Guardian Dogs - our experiences
We have run livestock guardian dogs (Great Pyrenees in our case) with our poultry, rabbits, sheep and goats for three years now. Before we got them we couldn't understand how people could justify the cost of having them. Now we realize that we cannot continue to farm the way we do without them. Here...

Re: best laying breed
Thanks all! Any recommendations as to who I could buy Khaki Campbells from? Is there a big difference between production, farmyard and show ducks? How do Performance Poultry ducks rate? I will need day-olds.

Re: best laying breed
Any recommendations to breeders of either khaki campbells or runners in Eastern Ontario? I will need to get day-olds. which of these breeds are easier to take care of? I use basic shelters (no power available for heated coops), free range during day and lock into pen at night.

Duck housing
I have had ducks in the past and, while I love having them, they are so messy! I am considering getting a flock of laying ducks in the spring - probably about 10 hens. I'd love to see your duck housing ideas and hints on how to manage the mess.

best laying breed
I am considering getting some ducks for eggs next year. What are your favorite duck breeds for laying eggs and why are they your favorite? How many eggs can I realistically expect from ducks?

Egg laying breed advice
GEDC0940.JPG In the summer two trailers are moved to this field. The chickens decide who goes where. I have checked at night and they all have roost space. In the winter both trailers are moved closer to the house where there are also two more smaller trailers plus three truck caps the chickens can...

Egg laying breed advice
Not sure if this is the right section but here goes..... We generally keep about 100 laying hens for production. We don't have a barn and don't have power to the coops so, although we keep deep bedding and have windproof chicken structures, the coops go below freezing. We use a cheap solar shed ligh...

Quick help please
Thanks all - now for the wait.... Maybe I should do a post about what I've learned once I get it figured out. I wish I had found one before setting all those eggs!
