Ontario Bee Kills Continue
I was just at Tibor Szabo's place the other day (we get our nuc colonies and queens directly from him). He was saying that this is the worst year he has seen yet for the spring kills, and every one of the incidents has happened right by freshly planted corn. Bad time of the year too as the bee popul...

I haven't had an issue yet, but we are pretty new to this. I wouldn't expect that the hive would be any more succeptible to robbing than if it was honey in the frames...since this feeder goes right inside the box...we put ours in a super, not the brood box. I have some entrance feeders that some red...

A frame feeder replaces one of the frames and can be filled with syrup. It has 2 tubes that are made of a kind of net so the bees can use it like a ladder of sorts to get down into the feeder. I use at least 2.5 to 1 sugar to water, sometimes heavier...as I found they can add too much moisture to th...

Be careful with the lemongrass oil, it mimics the queen's pheromones...you can really have an issue on your hands if used incorrectly. I have some that I am going to put in a spare "swarm box" on our property. I think that is what those guys use that do the beard of bees thing...so keep that in mind...

Giant onion project 2016
I came across this video of a grower way up north who does the huge veggie thing...his secret is the compost tea....some of these are ridiculously sized...maybe some ideas for your onion project? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj4FL0u1wvg I am setting up a new compost tea approach this year...focus...

Make sure you always check the meter yourself...I haven't been at our farm even 4 years yet, and we have had 6 discrepancies. As soon as you have a large bill once...it is almost like they try to gouge you more if you aren't paying attention. We used to have a geothermal system here, was nice and wa...

Plug trays and perlite
Yes, the Lee Valley price is good for those two. I also use the 4" block maker...it only makes one at a time, but the 2" block drops right into it. I think I paid about $100 for that one though...can't remember right away where...maybe Johnny's Seeds. That 2" block maker above comes with the cube in...

We started using soil blocks last year...no more pots for us at all! It starts with the 3/4" block for seed starting (300 can fit in a normal tray) then they slide right into the 2" block, and then those into a 4" block. It is like using lego instead of transplanting. By not using pots, you are "air...

Re: Seed Catalog
The only thing I like about winter here...a cup of coffee and exploring through seed catalogs! We buy most of our varieties from The Cottage Gardener, but a few others we have grown to like are Urban Harvest (Toronto I believe), High Mowing (vermont) West Cost Seeds (BC) and Joesph Simcox's site out...
